## Introduction to State Farm

Retired farmer George J. Mecherle founded State Farm in June 1922 as a mutual automobile insurance company owned by its policyholders. Corporate headquarters are in Bloomington, Illinois. State Farm is now the largest property, casualty, and auto insurance provider in the United States [(Fortune, "Fortune 500", 2024)](https://fortune.com/ranking/fortune500/).

Mecherle created the company to offer farmers competitive auto insurance rates. He specialized in coverage for farmers at better rates than rival companies, which also covered expensive premiums of urban motorists. The company later expanded into homeowners insurance, life insurance, banking, and financial services.

State Farm ranks 39th in the 2024 Fortune 500 [Ibid.](https://fortune.com/ranking/fortune500/). The company services over 96 million policies and accounts [(State Farm, "Car Insurance | Free Auto Insurance Quote", 2023)](https://www.statefarm.com/insurance/auto) across various services and processes approximately 34,000-39,000 claims daily. State Farm relies on exclusive agents (also known as captive agents) to sell insurance. Only State Farm agents can sell State Farm insurance, and their agents can sell only State Farm products.

In February 2026, State Farm announced the largest dividend in company history, with a $5 billion payout to auto insurance policyholders [(Kiplinger, "State Farm Giving Out $5 Billion in Refund Checks: Are You Getting One?", 2026)](https://www.kiplinger.com/personal-finance/car-insurance/state-farm-dividend-checks). The company averaged $100 per vehicle across 49 million insured vehicles, reflecting strong financial performance after years of rate adjustments.

## Does State Farm Sell Homeowners Insurance?

Yes. State Farm is the largest homeowners insurance company in the U.S. [(Insurance Information Institute, "Facts + Statistics: Homeowners and renters insurance", 2026)](https://www.iii.org/fact-statistic/facts-statistics-homeowners-and-renters-insurance).

### State Farm Homeowners Insurance Availability

State Farm does not sell homeowners insurance to new policyholders in California, Massachusetts, and Rhode Island. The company sells policies in Washington, D.C., and the remaining 47 states. After the Los Angeles fires in early 2025, State Farm instituted an emergency rate hike on its California policyholders. California regulators approved a 17% rate increase for roughly 1 million State Farm homeowners, effective June 2025, to help the insurer rebuild capital after major wildfire losses [(AP News, "California approves State Farm's request for 17% premium increase for homeowners", 2025)](https://apnews.com/article/0cf3c463ae54e0ed9466ca2924a9d590). The company isn't currently selling new homeowners policies in the state.

State Farm faced serious scrutiny over its handling of wildfire claims. In June 2025, California launched an investigation into State Farm's claims handling after reports of delayed and insufficient claim payments [(AP News, "California insurance regulator launches investigation into State Farm over claims from LA fires", 2025)](https://apnews.com/article/89fb02a746620e5ce78d5dff33561888). State Farm General Insurance Company, the California subsidiary, incurred $7.6 billion in catastrophe losses from the January 2025 LA wildfires and paid over $5 billion to affected families [(Insurance Journal, "Morningstar: A Year Later, LA Wildfires Were 'Significant Stress Event' for Insurance", 2026)](https://www.insurancejournal.com/news/west/2026/01/06/853253.htm). The company donated an additional $2 million to California relief organizations.

### Coverage Details

State Farm homeowners policies provide standard protection including:

- **Dwelling coverage**: Pays to repair or rebuild your home's structure after a covered event. Also covers attached structures such as porches. Typically provides enough coverage to rebuild your home.
- **Other structures coverage**: Pays to repair or rebuild stand-alone structures on your property, such as a fence or shed.
- **Personal property coverage**: State Farm homeowners policies generally include replacement cost coverage for your personal belongings so you can replace damaged or stolen items with brand-new ones.
- **Liability coverage**: Protects you if someone is injured on your property.
- **Loss of use coverage**: Helps pay for temporary living expenses if your home becomes uninhabitable.

### Optional Endorsements

State Farm offers a variety of add-ons or endorsements. Availability of endorsements may depend on your state and individual risk, but generally State Farm offers Extended Replacement Cost coverage, water backup coverage in case a drain backs up or a sump pump fails, service line coverage to protect damaged underground utility lines, and Ordinance or law coverage which reimburses costs related to building codes or zoning laws.

### Pricing

State Farm's pricing is competitive with other carriers of comparable size. According to U.S. News & World Report, State Farm ranked as the No. 2 most affordable home insurance premium with a sample monthly premium of $151 per month ($1,806 per year) for $300,000 dwelling coverage [(U.S. News & World Report, "State Farm Homeowners Insurance Review for 2026", 2026)](https://www.usnews.com/insurance/homeowners-insurance/state-farm), making it worthwhile to get quotes if you're shopping for new coverage.

I just had to give them my review. I must be blessed, and I thank you, Lord, because I have had great experiences both times I submitted claims with State Farm. The first was for the roof; I had a roof guy inspect it and, after saying I'm with State Farm, he literally told me to say a prayer. I did, and I was approved for a full roof replacement. And now, secondly, the hurricane hit. Now everyone is submitting claims and for the second time, I had a great experience and was satisfied with the repair payment I received.

I have had State Farm since I was 16 (I am 40 now) for Auto Insurance. I added them for home insurance in 2011. They canceled my policy three days ago for too many claims. I had one flood in 2013, another flood (in a different room, unrelated) in 2023, and a roof replacement in 2024.
