## <a id="introduction"></a>Introduction to Accelerant Insurance

Accelerant Insurance is a technology-driven specialty insurance platform [(founded in 2018, "Accelerant", 2026)](https://uk.linkedin.com/company/accelerant-holdings) by insurance industry veterans Jeff Radke and Chris Lee-Smith. The company operates a data-driven "Risk Exchange" that connects specialty insurance underwriters—known as managing general agents (MGAs)—with risk capital partners [(including reinsurers, insurers, and institutional investors)](https://accelerant.ai/about-us/).

Rather than function as a traditional insurance carrier, Accelerant operates as a hybrid platform that provides insurance capacity, technology infrastructure, and operational support to its MGA members. The company owns multiple insurance carriers, including **Accelerant Specialty Insurance Company** (a surplus lines carrier domiciled in Arkansas) and **Accelerant National Insurance Company** (formerly Commonwealth Insurance Company of America, an admitted carrier licensed in 48 states and DC), [(acquired in 2021, "Accelerant Acquires Commonwealth Insurance Company of America and Announces I...", 2021)](https://www.prnewswire.com/news-releases/accelerant-acquires-commonwealth-insurance-company-of-america-and-announces-introduction-of-insightfull-platform-in-us-market-301242319.html).

Accelerant holds an [(AM Best Financial Strength Rating of A- (Excellent))](https://news.ambest.com/newscontent.aspx?refnum=230677&altsrc=23) with a stable outlook, which AM Best [(reaffirmed in June 2025, "Untitled", 2026)](https://www.businesswire.com/news/home/20250604284725/en/AM-Best-Assigns-Credit-Ratings-to-Accelerant-Re-I.I.-Affirms-Credit-Ratings-of-Accelerant-Holdings-Rated-Subsidiaries) across all Accelerant subsidiaries. The company operates across the United States, United Kingdom, Europe, and Canada, [(serving nearly 200 specialty underwriters, "Beyond Legacy: How Data and Transparency Transforms Specialty Insurance for MGAs", 2026)](https://accelerant.ai/resources/beyond-legacy-how-data-and-transparency-transforms-specialty-insurance-for-mgas/) across more than 20 countries. The organization completed a successful IPO in July 2025, [(raising $723 million, "Accelerant's upsized IPO to raise firm $426m", 2025)](https://www.reinsurancene.ws/accelerants-upsized-ipo-to-raise-firm-426m/) and began trading on the NYSE under ticker symbol ARX with [(a $6.4 billion debut valuation, "Untitled", 2026)](https://www.nasdaq.com/articles/accelerants-64b-debut-fuels-insurance-ipo-resurgence).

## <a id="sellprimary"></a>Does Accelerant Sell Property & Casualty Insurance?

Yes, Accelerant's core business centers on property and casualty insurance for small and medium-sized commercial clients. The company operates through two primary insurance entities in the United States:

**Accelerant Specialty Insurance Company (ASIC)** - A surplus lines (non-admitted) carrier domiciled in Arkansas [(with NAIC code 16890, "Ins B21 05", 2026)](https://www.commerce.alaska.gov/web/Portals/11/Pub/INS_B21-05.pdf). This carrier handles excess and surplus lines business across multiple states, [(reporting $255.4 million in direct premium as of Q2 2024, "Untitled", 2026)](https://www.fslso.com/docs/default-source/uploadedfiles/reports/insurer-financial-reports/2q24-insurer-financial-reports/accelerant-specialty-insurance-company_16890_2q2024.pdf?sfvrsn=461daeef_3).

**Accelerant National Insurance Company (ANIC)** - [(Accelerant, "Licensing", 2026)](https://www.accelerant.com), formerly Commonwealth Insurance Company of America, domiciled in Delaware. [(Missouri records show no consumer complaints, "Untitled", 2026)](https://insurance.mo.gov/insurance-company/accelerant-national-insurance-company?topic=&wrapped=true) against ANIC. [(Missouri regulatory data shows ANIC wrote approximately $1.059 million in total property and casualty premiums in 2023, "Untitled", 2026)](https://insurance.mo.gov/insurance-company/accelerant-national-insurance-company), primarily in Inland Marine ($848,000) and Other Liability ($114,000) lines.

### State Availability

ASIC operates as a surplus lines carrier authorized in all 50 states. ANIC holds admitted licenses in 48 states and the District of Columbia. Top states for direct premium in Q2 2024 were New York and California ($88.4M), Florida ($48.8M), Texas ($27.9M), and New Jersey ($13.1M).

## <a id="howdoesitwork"></a>How Does Accelerant Insurance Work?

Accelerant operates differently from traditional insurance companies. Instead of selling policies directly to consumers, Accelerant functions as a risk exchange platform that connects specialty underwriters (MGAs) with insurance capital.

**The Process:**

**1. MGA Partnership:** Accelerant partners with carefully selected managing general agents who specialize in underwriting for niche markets. [(Member MGAs have grown at an average annual rate of 39%, "Beyond Legacy: How Data and Transparency Transforms Specialty Insurance for MGAs", 2026)](https://accelerant.ai/resources/beyond-legacy-how-data-and-transparency-transforms-specialty-insurance-for-mgas/)—three times the market standard—thanks to Accelerant's platform support.

**2. Technology Platform:** MGAs use Accelerant's proprietary **InsightFull™** platform, which [(ingests and validates data from 200+ members, "About Us", 2026)](https://accelerant.ai/about-us/), provides real-time analytics, automated underwriting referrals, and portfolio monitoring. The platform uses [(AI and machine learning to enhance underwriting, optimize pricing, and improve profitability)](https://accelerant.ai/about-us/). [(Accelerant uses proprietary datasets with over 11,000 unique attributes)](https://accelerant.ai/resources/bridging-the-smb-insurance-gap-why-the-backbone-of-the-economy-has-struggled-to-get-the-insurance-it-needs-and-how-technology-is-helping/) that enable Members to deliver more tailored, accurate insurance for small and medium-sized businesses.

**3. Capacity & Capital:** Accelerant provides stable, long-term capacity agreements (typically five years) to its MGA members, backed by [(60+ risk capital partners including institutional investors and reinsurers, "Beyond Legacy: How Data and Transparency Transforms Specialty Insurance for MGAs", 2026)](https://accelerant.ai/resources/beyond-legacy-how-data-and-transparency-transforms-specialty-insurance-for-mgas/).

**4. Consumer Purchase:** Small business owners purchase policies through retail insurance brokers who work with Accelerant's MGA members. Consumers cannot buy Accelerant policies directly—they must work through licensed brokers appointed to the specific MGA programs.

**5. Claims Handling:** Accelerant partners with modern claims administrators [(like Reserv, "How Reserv and Accelerant Are Transforming Claims Processing for Faster, Bett...", 2026)](https://accelerant.ai/resources/how-reserv-and-accelerant-are-transforming-claims-processing-for-faster-better-service/) to streamline the claims process using AI-powered technology that provides faster settlements and better customer experiences. <p>I feel like such an idiot not having searched reviews before signing up for insurance with this company. They were recommended by my industry group, which negotiated a discount on rates. A lot of good a discount is if the insurance doesn't pay claims. Their reasoning was strained beyond belief. At least it was a relatively small claim, and I will be switching companies ASAP.</p>

<p>Beware of Bad Faith Practices by Accelerant National Insurance. We experienced significant roof damage after a storm in July 2024, but despite clear evidence of storm-related damage, Accelerant's subcontracted adjuster provided a completely false assessment. They claimed the damage was caused by "foot traffic" and "wear and tear"—which is entirely inaccurate. Accelerant failed to communicate transparently, refused to provide written documentation, and used the same false claims as another insurance company involved.</p>

## <a id="faq"></a>Frequently Asked Questions

### Is Accelerant Insurance a Real Insurance Company?

Yes, Accelerant is a legitimate insurance organization. The company operates multiple licensed insurance carriers, including Accelerant Specialty Insurance Company (surplus lines carrier in Arkansas) and Accelerant National Insurance Company (admitted carrier in Delaware with licenses in 48 states plus DC). [(Accelerant holds an AM Best A- (Excellent) rating)](https://news.ambest.com/newscontent.aspx?refnum=230677&altsrc=23), which was [(reaffirmed across all subsidiaries in June 2025, "Untitled", 2026)](https://www.businesswire.com/news/home/20250604284725/en/AM-Best-Assigns-Credit-Ratings-to-Accelerant-Re-I.I.-Affirms-Credit-Ratings-of-Accelerant-Holdings-Rated-Subsidiaries).

### How Does Accelerant Make Money?

Accelerant generates revenue through three primary segments: (1) **Exchange Services** - charges risk capital partners fixed-percentage, volume-based fees for sourcing and managing business through the Risk Exchange; (2) **MGA Operations** - earns fees from originating and underwriting insurance policies through owned MGAs; (3) **Underwriting** - assumes risk by underwriting and accepting reinsurance through its owned insurance carriers [(Yahoo Finance, "Accelerant Holdings", 2026)](https://finance.yahoo.com/quote/ARX/).

### Can I Buy Accelerant Insurance Directly?

No. Accelerant does not sell insurance directly to consumers. You must purchase coverage through a licensed insurance broker who works with one of Accelerant's MGA member partners. The broker will help you access the appropriate specialty program for your business needs.

### What Makes Accelerant Different from Traditional Insurers?

Accelerant operates as a data-driven risk exchange platform rather than a traditional insurance carrier. The company [(uses proprietary AI and machine learning technology, "About Us", 2026)](https://accelerant.ai/about-us/) to analyze granular policy-level data from its MGA members, providing real-time insights that improve underwriting accuracy and pricing. [(The platform uses proprietary datasets with over 11,000 unique attributes)](https://accelerant.ai/resources/bridging-the-smb-insurance-gap-why-the-backbone-of-the-economy-has-struggled-to-get-the-insurance-it-needs-and-how-technology-is-helping/) to enable more tailored insurance for small and medium-sized businesses. This technology-first approach allows Accelerant to serve niche markets that traditional carriers often avoid.

### Is Accelerant Good Insurance?

Accelerant's financial strength is solid, with [(AM Best maintaining an A- (Excellent) rating)](https://www.businesswire.com/news/home/20250604284725/en/AM-Best-Assigns-Credit-Ratings-to-Accelerant-Re-I.I.-Affirms-Credit-Ratings-of-Accelerant-Holdings-Rated-Subsidiaries) and strong growth metrics showing [(full-year 2025 written premium of $4.19 billion, up 35% year-over-year)](https://www.streetinsider.com/Business+Wire/Accelerant+Announces+Unaudited+Preliminary+Fourth+Quarter+and+Full+Year+2025+Financial+Results/26071395.html). However, customer reviews tell a different story. [(Trustpilot rates Accelerant at 2.2 out of 5 stars based on 8 reviews, "Accelerant is rated "Poor" with 2.1 / 5 on Trustpilot", 2026)](https://uk.trustpilot.com/review/accelerant.ai), with multiple complaints about claims denials and lack of transparency. For small businesses in specialty or niche industries where coverage options are limited, Accelerant-backed policies may provide necessary protection. Business owners should work with experienced brokers, carefully review policy terms, document all interactions, and obtain multiple quotes before purchasing.

### Does Accelerant Offer Homeowners Insurance?

No. Accelerant focuses exclusively on commercial specialty insurance and does not offer standard homeowners insurance policies. The company serves small and medium-sized businesses through approximately 500 specialty insurance products across commercial property, general liability, professional liability, and other specialty lines. [(An examination report from Delaware's insurance department, "Accelerantnationalinsuranceco2023Web", 2025)](https://insurance.delaware.gov/wp-content/uploads/sites/15/2025/05/AccelerantNationalInsuranceCo2023web.pdf) confirms that while Accelerant National Insurance Company writes some farmowners coverage, the company does not provide traditional homeowners policies for individual residential properties.
