# The Coverage Cat MCP follows the purchase past the quote

An umbrella quote leaves several things unfinished. The shopper still has to choose an offer, supply any required documents, complete payment, and get a policy record. The updated Coverage Cat MCP exposes those follow-up steps on the consumer connection, including policy reads and support requests after purchase. [The current MCP guide describes that continuation](https://www.coveragecat.com/developers/mcp).

For an agent developer, the interesting part is what survives between those steps: the application identity, the authority to act on it, and a precise account of what has happened so far.

## The public entrypoint creates a scoped continuation

The consumer flow starts with `umbrella_consumer_prefill` or `homeowners_consumer_prefill`. It does not need an operator OAuth grant. On the default `/api/consumer/mcp` connection, each stateless follow-up supplies the application's `uid` and the freshest rotated `intake_access_token`. Legacy hosts can also preserve a hidden MCP shopper session, but a client cannot assume that session exists. [Coverage Cat documents both mechanisms](https://www.coveragecat.com/developers/mcp).

The application keeps its `uid` while its continuation credentials can change. A client therefore needs to save fresh handoff state as responses arrive without creating a second application. The consumer contract includes an expiry, a direct follow-up token, a coarse-status polling token, and a browser resume URL. [Those fields are defined in the consumer OpenAPI contract](https://www.coveragecat.com/api/consumer/openapi.yaml).

This split lets a personal shopping agent start without a brokerage-wide credential. The continuation still has to establish which application it may read or change. Keep that state in the host's credential storage, with the same scope as the purchase.

An initial prefill response also carries a `review_summary`. The contract calls it a non-authoritative checkpoint before submission. An agent can summarize it for the shopper, but should still say the application is not submitted until a later response establishes quote progress. [Ibid.](https://www.coveragecat.com/api/consumer/openapi.yaml)

Here is the shape of a first umbrella rehearsal call. The name and contact details are synthetic, and the application is deliberately incomplete:

```json
{
  "sandbox": true,
  "credit_consent_pending": true,
  "intake": {
    "full_name": "Taylor Example",
    "email": "taylor@example.test",
    "address": {
      "street": "123 Main St",
      "city": "San Francisco",
      "state": "CA",
      "zip": "94107"
    }
  }
}
```

Pass that object to `umbrella_consumer_prefill`. Set `sandbox: true` only on the first call, then continue on the returned `uid`. This consumer umbrella sandbox covers synthetic quotes, documents, payment, policy records, and service requests. It sends no live carrier submission, customer email, charge, or credit inquiry. [The sandbox guide defines its scope](https://www.coveragecat.com/developers/sandbox).

## A payment method is one step toward a policy

After the shopper chooses an umbrella offer, bind follow-up can return states such as `documents_needed`, `documents_pending_review`, or `payment_needed`. Those states identify remaining work; a successful tool invocation by itself is not evidence that coverage is in force. [The bind response enumerates these states](https://www.coveragecat.com/api/consumer/openapi.yaml).

On the consumer MCP, `payment_needed` leads to `umbrella_consumer_payment`. The first payment request asks Coverage Cat to prepare secure card collection. Replace the placeholders below with the application's current continuation values:

```json
{
  "uid": "<uid returned by prefill>",
  "intake_access_token": "<latest intake_access_token>",
  "payment_collection_requested": true
}
```

The secure client completes setup, then the follow-up request supplies the returned `setup_intent_id` and `payment_method_id`. Card details belong in that secure flow. A `payment_url` remains available when the host needs a website fallback. Policy status comes from `umbrella_consumer_policy`. [The payment contract](https://www.coveragecat.com/api/consumer/openapi.yaml) and [MCP guide](https://www.coveragecat.com/developers/mcp) describe those separate steps.

That separation matters for retries and for the final answer. “The payment method was saved” and “the policy is issued” refer to different records. The runtime should preserve the distinction even if the user asked for the whole purchase in one sentence.

## The checkout route depends on the host

Coverage Cat publishes separate MCP connections for different authority and checkout arrangements:

| Connection | Intended use | Checkout behavior |
| --- | --- | --- |
| `/api/consumer/mcp` | A consumer's agent, without operator OAuth | Continue on the consumer tools, with secure payment UI where available and a website fallback. |
| `/api/chatgpt/mcp` | ChatGPT, with shopper OAuth for protected application tools | Compare and select with the advertised tools, then use the returned website checkout or payment URL. |
| `/api/agent/mcp` | An operator integration with OAuth or an existing bearer token | Use the delegated tools under that operator's authority. |
| `/poppy/mcp` | A personal agent with an authenticated Poppy guest session | Use consumer shopping and policy tools under that session's purchase grants. |

The [MCP guide](https://www.coveragecat.com/developers/mcp) describes the consumer, ChatGPT, and operator paths. The [agent discovery metadata](https://www.coveragecat.com/.well-known/agent.json) advertises the Poppy 0.2 connection. A manifest-aware host can discover the default connection through the well-known manifest; a direct Streamable HTTP client needs the transport URL.

For ChatGPT, the protected resource is `https://app.coveragecat.com/api/chatgpt/mcp`. Its [OAuth metadata advertises consumer read and write scopes](https://app.coveragecat.com/.well-known/oauth-protected-resource/api/chatgpt/mcp). Keep that shopper authorization attached to the application as the conversation continues.

A continuation should stay on its selected connection. In particular, the ChatGPT flow completes uploads and checkout on Coverage Cat's website, then uses that same ChatGPT connection for status and policy follow-up. Switching to the consumer or operator API would change the checkout arrangement halfway through the task.

This is an integration constraint worth putting in a test. The available tool catalog and returned next action should drive the continuation. A tool name recalled from another connection is a poor substitute.

## Some work outlasts the conversation

Homeowners quotes or bind follow-up may take up to 48 hours. The consumer loop can receive an insurer follow-up through `conversation.reply_pending`; the reply goes back through `consumer_intake_patch` as `message_reply`. Homeowners payment and signing links go to the customer's email on file. [Those behaviors are part of the homeowners MCP guidance](https://www.coveragecat.com/developers/mcp).

A runtime needs a way to retain the application and resume later. On the Poppy connection, an authenticated agent can call `consumer_purchases` with empty arguments to recover applications it created or was explicitly granted. After a session expires, a fresh session for the same client and opaque shopper identity can find those purchases. The returned application IDs lead back to `consumer_intake_issues` and the appropriate policy tool. [The discovery metadata publishes those recovery tools and their scope](https://www.coveragecat.com/.well-known/agent.json).

An insurer can still be working when a credential expires. The runtime should authenticate again and read the existing application. Starting another application would turn session recovery into a second shopping run.

A status read can also require shopper email verification. Ask the shopper before calling `consumer_intake_verify_email` with `confirm_send: true`. The link goes to the application's email on file, and the agent polls status after the shopper opens it. The login link is never returned to the agent. [The consumer contract defines that verification step](https://www.coveragecat.com/api/consumer/openapi.yaml).

After purchase, the policy and service tools keep that distinction. A service request with `confirm_request: false` returns a preview. Only after the shopper approves that preview should the agent send `confirm_request: true` to open the request. A cancellation request is still a request whose result needs follow-up. [The service schema makes the preview explicit](https://www.coveragecat.com/api/consumer/openapi.yaml).

Connector data retains its purpose restriction through these handoffs: insurance purchase and related policy support. Coverage Cat's notice also applies to derived datasets, so aggregation alone does not make unrelated reuse permissible. [The connector data-handling notice spells out that scope](https://www.coveragecat.com/developers/data-handling).

A useful end-to-end test should therefore interrupt the flow. Stop after prefill, after an offer selection, and after a payment handoff. Resume each application with current credentials, read its state, and check that the agent's next sentence describes the work that actually finished.
